About six months ago, I installed power steering fluid filters on my C4, my Lincoln TownCar, and my Ford Ranger.
The Lincoln gets the most miles -- it is used for long trips. After about 12K miles on the Lincoln, the fluid is still clean.
So far, I've been very happy with this modification. I've seen no ill effects on any of my vehicles.
I used an in-line Honda automatic transmission filter for this.
Re: Power Steering fluid filter install update..... (scorp508)
This sounds interesting... any pictures?
Sorry Scorp, my last camera got sand in it at the beach.
I put the filter in the return line of the power steering system. Don't put it in the high pressure lines.
On my '92 LT1 C4, it is hanging just below the power steering fluid reservoir in the return line.
There are also filters that will work that not only filter but have a magnet to trap iron particles. I am not using one of these at this time.
The reason I did this was mainly for my Lincoln -- it gets used a lot, and I am constantly replacing the power steering pump and steering gear. When I look at the fluid in the used components, they were black and full of debris.

I also flush my power steering system onc a year. I have yet to replace a rack or a pump. The highest miles Iv'e had on a car with a rack was 190,000 and I sold it with the original rack and pump. I also use power steering fluid not ATF.
