Hello people I am experiencing a problem with the vette while it is in drive. It idles perfect in park and rev's really nice, the timing is good and everything. You would think it's in perfect working condition. But when I put it drive it has no *****! As I give it gas there is sounds of popping coming from the engine bay and it runs better at idle cause I can go faster like that. LOL! Anyhow, I don't know what the problem is so if any of you people have an answer to this...THANK YOU!
What model year is it? If it's got the 700R4 tranny, your kickdown might not be working properly, which would prevent the tranny from downshifting to 1st when you nail it while the selector is in Drive. As far as the popping that you say is coming from under the hood, does that only happen when you have the engine in drive and nail it (in other words, a load on the motor) or does it happen any time you give the engine a lot of throttle?
The popping is definitely related to the ignition, I know this because it just happened to my truck. Has the car been sitting a lot? Whens the last time you did a plug/wire/cap/rotor change?
Have you checked your plug wires to see if any are touching each other or something else?
Had same issue with an 87 Camaro with L98. It was a clogged cat. Same behavior, ideled fine, drove fine under light/medium throttle, anything more it you hear a popping sound and severe loss of power. I spent a lot of time looking at a bunch of different things, I ended up taking a mechanic for a test drive and it was his first guess.

Yes the car has been sitting for at least 4-5 years tops. I have changed everything that you have listed thinking that this would solve the problem ,but it still persists. Thanks.

Its an 85' . And how will I know if thats the tranny that it has? Yes it only does it when it has a load on the motor and when I give it a bit or WOT. The car seems to run fine in idle as it picks up more speed...do you get me?
have you checked the actual PLUGS? One time, while putting on new spark plugs, I accidently CRACKED one. (Didn't even know I cracked it!) But I took it out for a test drive, and gave it a little gas and it just started popping and having no *****. But at idle it was 100% fine. You may want to change out the plugs and GENTLY tighten them up when you put the new ones in. See if that doesn't change things.
