I've had my Ripper shifter for almost 6 months on my ZF6 and lately it has been making a bunch of noise a cruising speed. The noise gets really loud and the shifter has a bunch of vibration at high speeds in 6th. Anyone else experience this with the ripper??? Is it normal???
Mine has a slight resonance vibration around 2500-3000 rpm but not like what you are talking about. On mine the little spacers and flat springy spacers would not fit. I had to actually file down both sides of the swing plate brass pins just a touch.
If your vibration is really bad, it could possibly be one of two things:
1) If it is rpm related, it could be a flywheel/clutch or engine issue
2) If it is speed related I would look at the driveshaft to see if any balance pads had fallen off, it could even be a U-joint
but I'm just guessing
Have either of you two ever driven a Hurst shifter in a vette. If so what did you think. My vette is in the air right now with no exhaust and I can't decide which one to buy. Know what you know now would you recommend it. I appreciate your thoughts. They do say B@M vibrate more than Hurst.
I barely have any vibration at all..... Nothing at cruising..... If you have the radio off and listen super hard you might be able to hear a litle something, but nothing anyone can notice. When I installed it i packed everything with Kelly Blue grease. I love that shifter!........ One of the better mods I have done
I've never driven with a Hurst. They are good shifters, but I like the very short throw of the B&M.
The vibration that I do get is slight, not objectional at all. It is more like a buzz, resting my hand on the shift **** gets rid of it. I have often thought if I had done a better job fitting the swing plate, that it would not buzz at all. It is just not worth the effort [for me] to get rid of it.
LT4 2 fast, how well did your swing plate fit?
The swingplate, if I remember correctly, fit nice and snug. The only problems I remember having were getting that damn pin in the lower bushing, and I had to cut the boot because It did not come off like it said. The shifter had no vibration for about 5 months or so, only recently did it start. I think my clutch has about had it though as its beginning to slip, and it's making noises when the pedal is depressed, but thats a completely new thread there. I understand that the clutch is gonna really cost me a fortune to get replaced :smash: :banghead: . I 'm tempted to take the console apart again and see how snug everything still is, but man thats really a pain. I have heard that bad U joints cause the shifter to vibrate, but how do I tell?
If you hear a sound when you depress clutch, like a whirling sound, usually that is the throwout bearing starting to go. Alot of people, when sitting at a light, leave clutch in which shortens life of throwout bearing. It could be the vibration is the throw out bearing. Thanks everyone on the info about B@M shifters.
The Hurst is just a shorter version of the stock lever. No adj. It gets rid of reverse lock out. Since it is 1 and half inches shorter it reduces shift distance by 30%. The B@M changes the fulcrum point therefore shortens throw by 40%. Hurst shifters in the F-body are adjustable. Put one in wife's car a week ago. Only took 35 minutes. Wish vette could be that quick. If you are hearing noise while driving with clutch engaged, is it in every gear. Or just at idle with car in neutral.

I can hear it in 1st gear, but with all the whine, rattle, road noise and exhaust, its hard to hear other than at idle. BTW , I am having a hard time shifting into 4th sometimes. And when I shift to 5th at around 40-50 MPH, it the whine dont sound too pretty.....
