In case anyone is looking for an elegant solution to a "too loud" exhaust, I recommend the "CC Insert" by car chemistry. (www.carchemistry.com)
I installed a "two disc" insert into the rear Y pipe just behind the cat. My system is a Magnaflow so it took at 3" diameter insert. Measure yours before ordering. (Car is 88)
It goes in very easily with a tight fit. I drilled a hole, tapped it, and put a bolt through both pieces to ensure it stays put after insertion, but frankly, the fit was so snug that I could not imagine it moving...but pipes do expand when hot so safety first. Car chemistry recommends putting some locktite on the bolt, or riveting or tack welding it in.
Results were a 3-6 db noise reduction (checked with meter, c-weighed)making the Magnaflow sound really nice without being overly loud.
Best of all, this solution costs only $45.00 and took about 30 minutes to install. In theory, it could be removed.

Huh?
Not sure I understand your reply to my post. Was it somehow inappropriate for the forum?
I did considerable research to find this solution, and thought others might benefit from it. I had never heard of Car Chemistry until I found their website two weeks ago.

Sounds interesting, but wouldn't this kind of defat the whoel point of having a loud/free flowing exhuast, by putting something in the way to slow down exhaust flow and muffle sounds?

No, it's OK. The real spammers run up their post counts in the Test and General Discussion forums.
I'm up around Buffalo; although they don't measure dB yet (except maybe State Trooper spotchecks), it's a good thing to know.
Some of these guys here who have to go through yearly smog checks might be interested, too. There's a post here somewhere about "visual" checks. I suppose if an inspector heard a loud exhaust, he might pay more attention to borderline emissions measurements.
Thats a better alterantive than what I tried. I put a 1/4 piece of aluminum into the end of one pipe on each side and bolted it into the tube. I could take it out when I wanted to but it quieted the car down for the rides with the wife! :seeya
Re: I found an exhaust noise solution. (88FOURSPEED)
Sounds like a possible solution for some people, I had thought of trying super trap, or spin tech, I wanted a performance exhaust sound with out being too loud, ( Im 50, The vette is a daily driver ) I have another car for loud, plus in my neighbor hood 2 chamber flowmasters will get ya pulled over in a hartbeat.
I haven't heard magnaflows on a early C4- But in my opnion they look like one of best choices out their for the L98, except I've read their loud and tend to have a drone on some automatic coups.
Some engines need some backpressure to run right, even the flowmasters have baffels inside to create some.
I got lucky on my system and got the sound I wanted without the drone, and it seems to flow fine, ( I went with 50 series flows -w- long tube heeders & a magnaflow cat. ) when the magnaflow cat was put beside the random tech and a flash light was stuck in the end of each the magnaflow looked like the best choice.
JMO_____YMMV__ :)
