Default Loose shifter **** on a 88 automatic

Today I got in my car and noticed my shifter **** was loose. I alsoo saw a little retainer ring laying on the console that I assume is fr0om the shifter. I have no clue as to where this snaps on to?

Thanks

Pry the button out and slip the C-clip down over the shaft.

It took a very narrow tip on a C-clip plyer for me to get it back on.
