I have been trying to remove the shifter **** from my 6 sp (92). All I have managed to do is screw up the key that locks the **** into place. It just won't budge and when I tried to use vise grips to remove it part of the top broke off. Now there isn't enough exposed to grab with anything. Can this be drilled out without hurting the shifter? I would appreciate any suggestions on getting this bugger out. Thanks.
Oh, fun. It's the key of death.
I would first try drilling a pilot hole down the center of what's left of the key. Then take a sheet metal screw and thread it in the hole carefully. Only thread it far enough to get a good grip.
Next, clamp your vise grip on the head of the screw and using a ball pean hammer, tap the vise grips in an upward motion while pulling up on the screw. Don't whack the hell out of it, just tap-tap-tap with even pressure.
Make sure the screw you use has coarse enough threads to bite into the key. Don't use a machine screw, that will probably just strip out.
Oh, and the most important tool to use is BEER!
