No need to drop the tranny and diff. You will need to drop the exhaust system, but everything else under the car stays put. The shift counsol inside the car has to come off too.
There's instructions on how to do this on the Hurst website, pretty close to the B&M.
As stated, I don't think it's a have too, I just think it's a "makes it easier". I think I'm going to have the Ripper installed the next time I need a new clutch. :yesnod:
I installed my Hurst and I can promise you it's not going to be easier to drop the trans and the diff to install it. First of all, there's no need to drop the diff, once the driveshaft is removed, the diff has no effect. Second, dropping the trans is a big job and it won't make this job any easier by more than 10 minutes. Considering the effort to remove/reinstall the trans, it's much easier to just follow the install instructions, which have the exhaust removed but not the trans/diff.
Maybe the shop is just cranking up the labor rate. A good mechanic can do the job in less than 2 hours, took me a little longer
I'd sure stay away from that shop. The instillation is a pain, but worth it. While you're under there, it's a good time to change the transmission oil, if it's not been done lately
It's also a great time to replace your fuel filter. To drop the tranny, I have to remove the shifter first. How does that make it easier? Don't let this guy touch your Vette.
Why do you have to remove the shifter? Mines been out a couple of times and the shifter was never removed.
I was reading from the Helms GM Shop manual where they list down to the shifter retaining nuts under Transmission removal. Maybe you can remove it without taking out the shifter, but it seems easier to handle the tranny without the shifter on it. Oh well to each his own.
Just finished replacing a clutch in my 91. Also installed a ripper at this time . I R&R'D the transmission with the shifter attached and installed the B&M while the trans. was out. I can't imagine doing it any other way, considering the circumstances, ( trans. out ). I definately wouldn't remove the shifter to remove the trans, thats the least of your worries.

I don't think he wants to pay someone to remove the tranny just to put the shifter in. It's a matter of following the instructions, at least for installing the Hurst shifter. When you pulled the tranny back from the bellhousing to remove, didn't the shifter handle hit the hole in the floor? Was there enough room?
The only advanage I can see to having the trans out is that it's easier to reinstall the rubber boot on the top of the trans. Everything else is pretty easy.
My biggest problem was the beam, just couldn't get it out. Support the trans with a suitable jack, remove the beam, shift the trans. into third, lower the trans while pulling the trans. to the rear. my shifter cleared the car easily. The transmission is heavy, so it has to be supported with a jack. I used a transmission jack so it was relatively easy.
Hey Stingray, When you lower the tranny, aren't you also lowering the rear of the engine until you get the front spline out of the housing? If so, anything up front of the engine need addressing? I haven't done it yet and a clutch is in the future along with a rear main seal.
Tom,
Thats how I did mine, I originally put a jack under the engine, then decided I didn't need it. Replacing the rear main at this time is smart, I replaced the front and rear seals in the transmission also. replaced the U joints and installed beam plates too. I converted mine to a single mass, haven't driven it yet, but soon. Taken a lot longer that it should have, haven't been able to work on it because of travel.
