i've got a 90 auto and am having trouble shifting into overdrive and sometimes out of first. OK, changed fluid about 700 miles ago, adjusted TV cable but it didn't really help. I did a search and this is all I could find that made sense. "Yes, we really need to know what gear shifts you are on to know what is not holding. 1-2 is the band, then you could have a problem with the band, the servo, or drum. 2-3 is handled by the 3-4 clutch pack, the 700's most common point of failure, and the 3-4 shift is handled by the band again." Thanks :flag
When I take my car for a longer ride it seems to start shifting differently, It holds first gear until the RPMs get way up there and then it will not go into overdrive. Now that it is cooled off it will shift first through third perfectly, but will not go into OD. The fluid level is fine and so is the color, I have changed out teh filter and fluid about 400 miles ago. What is the problem???
Let me know if I really undersand: You are going 70 or 80 mph and the trans do not shifts in overdrive?? Sorry iff I say this, the lever is in OD when you expect to go in overdrive?
Maybe the lever is in OD but the selector is not properly adjusted ad you think to be in OD and in real you are in D. Try to go UP a click with the stick like if you want to go in N , then if you let the brake pedal and the car go...
you are in OD and not in N.
The fluid level must be checked with the trans in Park and the engine running at idle. The Fluid should be warm ( ride the car 10 miles or 15 at moderate speed, stop the car and the engine, do a P to 1 two or three times ending in P, start the engine..... pull the dipstick and if you feel the fluid warm and the level is near the Full mark all is OK).

When you shift out of first...does it seem to have a little roughness in the shift?
If so...it sounds familiar. What I saw before was tghe splined hub the input shaft fits into has the 4th clutch pack around it...and it can crack, causing erratic 4th gear operation and rough 1st gear shifts as it skips spline engagement under heavy shifting/torque transfer.
If so...just baby it until you can get it rebuilt, because it will leave you stranded.
