I am trying to figure out the problem with my air conditioning. It used to work, but over the winter i didnt use it and now its hot and its blowing hot air. :mad When I turn on the a/c, set it to 60 and auto, I can hear the compressor click on, then the idle of the car seems to go up and down. The clutch (i suppose the clutch is the thing on the outside of the a/c compressor that doesnt spin when its off and spins when its on, am i right?) will engage for a second or two, and then stops, for about 5 seconds before it starts to engage again. This action will repeat itself until I turn the a/c off. What does this mean? Am I looking at compressor replacement, just the clutch, or is there something else wrong?
Sounds like your system is low on freon and the low pressure switch is electrically cutting the clutch off when the pressure get too low.
Hmmm ok...thats something to work with....So is it possible that my compressor is not fried yet??? Its nice to know something on my car is working like it should  . Anyways, how hard is it to check the system for leaks assuming I can get my hands on some r-12?? :blueangel: Do I need to fill it up before I can test or is there a way to do it without losing half my freon during testing.
:iagree: unless you have the guages and recliam equipment. Let the pros check it. Got a buddy in the AC business ??? Good luck and let us know what you find.

I'm just not a big fan of the shops around here since they all like to attempt to screw me and have me pinned as a dumb kid who they can milk because he doesnt know anything about his car. I have a friend who can get me r-12 and a set of gauges i can borrow, so shouldnt i just be able to buy a can of dye at the autoparts??
Yea, sure. Just get the guages first. Check the high and low side before you invest in any R12. Report back here the pressures with the compressor off and with the compressor on. WHat I suspect is that the low side will go below 20 PSI with the compressor running and the switch will disengage the clutch. If so, then it will be time to buy a couple of cans of r12 and leak check.
