Default Heater Core shutoff.

A while back i saw a post here where someone installe a ball valve in the upper heater hose on his C3 to shut off the flow of water to the heater during the summer time. The claim was that on the C3 the water constantly flows through the heater core regardless of the position of the heater switch.

Does it work the same way on the early C4s. I live in the desert and the less heat in the cockpit the better. The upper hose comes from the TB to the heater. (I think that is the flow direction) Can this be done? it sounds practical for summer driving. Anyone know?

Hey man, I miss Vegas. Back to the subject, Why not run a "T" and have it so you can shut off the flow to the core, as in a bypass arangement. I don't know how that would affect the climate control system though. I"m not sure if it needs it to mix with A/C or help thaw any part of the system. I've only heard of guys bypassing the core to stop leaks until they fix or replace the leaking core.

Thanks, at least you had enough sense not to join the Navy. AF 67-77 Couldn't take more than 10 years.

My mom didn't raise a dummie. Except for one lousy year, the AF was a great time. Red Flag was a kick.

hmm... well i have had the heater core problem and can vouch for the fact that bypassing the heater core will cool down the in car temperatures a little bit, but i couldnt tell you how it affects the a/c since my a/c is broken. :leaving:

This might be one of those great ideas to cool down the interior. A couple of valves and 2 "Ts" along with some heater hose, and you have the summertime or wintertime positions. Hummmmmmmmmmmmmm. ;)

Does anyone know if the flow from the core is to the TB or Vice versa?

Also I think heat is necessary for the defroster but out here other than winter we never need that anyway. And we dont have enough humidity to freeze the AC evap.

Looking at the shop manual it shows the flow from the TB to the core and out the core to the expansion tank and back to the coolant pump. I just went out to check that on my 92 and that's what it does, except I bypassed my TB.

I found it. will have to explore it further thanks

After my intensive investigation the diverter DOES shut off the water to the core unless the temp slider is pushed towards heat. The it opens up accordingly. Thanks to all who answered. :seeya

Your signature name describes my Vette exactly. :smash:

I didn't spot any diverter valve in my set up. Maybe the reverse flow and climate control system doesn't use a diverter for some reason. :skep:

i believe electronic a/c wont have it . it should have a door to automatically adjust the temp. it will have heat in the core at all times. it blends the cold air from the evaporator with the hot air from the heater core to get the temp it wants.

So, you can make it so you can manually divert (bypass) the core? I don't have this diverter.
