OTHER THAN BUYING NEW RIMS, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO SEND THEM FOR RESTORATION. MY 89 RIMS ARE LOOKING PRETTY SHABBY! I KINDA LIKE THE ORIGINALS BUT ARE HARD TO EIND EVEN IF I WANTED TO BUY NEW!
Try either Trans Wheel or Wheel America. Both do very nice and reasonable refinishing of Al wheels. They both have service centers nationawide and many body shops and tire stores offer their services. The 88-90 wheels are my favorites as well :steering:
These guys:http://www.hubcap-wheelstore.com/Restoration.htm
fixed mine better then new for around $100.
They do have locations in differant areas, so ther might be one near you so you don't have to ship the wheels.
Hi Blackvette89. I contemplated buying new wheels for my'89 too, but you can't get them new from GM anymore (discontinued). I actually have 2 ses of wheels for my car - the original '89s, and a set of '90s. And I had to have BOTH sets refinished.
The original '89 wheels where done by a guy who specialized only in wheel refinishing. This guy did most of his work BY HAND! And while the work was phenominal, it was reflected in the time it took (I dropped them off the end of August 2001 and I got them back the end of December 2001!) and the price - about $380CDN per wheel!!! The price new at the time (if they hadn't been discontinued) was like $425CDN per wheel! But the finish is truly outstanding - better than factory. In fact the clear coat is so thick, you'd swear you could put your finger into it up to your knuckle! They look so great I'm afraid to use them.
The set of '90s on the other hand where done by a place that used very modern CNC type equipment. The finish is very comparable to the '89s, but the price and turn-around time was nowhere near one another. $100 per wheel with a 48 hour turn-around time! And that included clear power-coat inside and out, and removal/remount of my old tires (if I wanted to keep them). I think balancing was extra.
If you are interested in sending your wheels up here to Canada to have them done, let me know and I'll send you the names and numbers of these places. Who knows, with the US vs. Canadian dollar value the way it is, it may be worth it to send them up here.
Good luck.
P.S. The place that did my '90 wheels had a set of '89 wheels that they had refinished. They looked great, but I don't remember what they where asking for them. If you're interested, let me know and I'll send you their number.
I have a set for sale $275.
you could use them while yours get refinished, or you could have these refinished, even though they aren't that bad at all....
