LT4's with zf6, LT1 with autos? Some things I have read lately have sugested that the zf6 was only produced with the LT4 in 96? I'm about to mount a zf6 to an LT1 and I'd like to know If I'm gonna have a problem (aside from the elbow grese involved). I thought the only differance between the LT1 and LT4 was 45hp due to heads, cam, etc. I was under the understanding that the LT4 was simply an option.???
Yes, in '96 the ZF only came with the LT4. Physically the ZF will bolt up fine to your LT1 (this combo was used from '92-'95). You *may* need a different driveshaft since the ZF was teamed with the D44 rear vs the D36 in the LT1 automatic cars, but I don't remember for sure. In addition, you'll need to do some PCM programming work
So what do ya think I neeed for the PCM programming work? (hypertech powerprogramer?)
Thanks,
Nick
Before moving forward, I would research the PCM inputs. A Factory Service Manual will have the PCM pinouts identified. It may be as simple as rewiring a few connectors. If this turns out to not be the case (or only partially) and programming is required, then I would consider one of the following:
1) Buy LT1 Edit for OBD II if you want to program it yourself ($550 plus you need a cheap laptop ($200 & up) and scanning software ($150-$300))
or
2) Contact a tuner such as Ed Wright and work through him ($350 - $500)
or
3) Convert to a '95 OBD 1 PCM with a LT1/ZF6 program
A Hypertech is worthless for the type of programming you will need if you need it.
It may work out of the box. I'm just suggesting you may want to research the PCM aspects of it a bit before diving in.
