I have a 85 with stock iron heads. I installed a Crane 2030 cam and since then valve train ticks and I can’t get rid of it. I have new: push rods, stamped rockers, Crane springs and retainers 11308-1 that are recommended for the cam, springs shimmed to set installed height at 1.7 in., new seals, true roller timing chain, new GM balancer, TPIS headers.
I have adjusted the valves every way I could find, the GM manual method, the exhaust starts to open adjust intake, intake almost closed adjust exhaust method, and with the engine running back them off until they start clacking then slowly tighten them until they stop clacking then another ¾ turn. I have tried ½, 5/8, ¾ turn with no difference.
What would a bad lifter do when the is engine running. If I probe the rocker stud with a mechanics stethoscope when the engine is running some sound a little louder then others but not a big difference. Is this just something I have to live with? Do I need louder mufflers? :lolg:
Are you sure it's not just the injector pulse you're hearing? I remember thinking the ticking noise on my motor was weird until I realized it was just the injectors.
Re: Ticking valve train, bad lifters? (89TexasVette)
I'd bet a wad of $$$ that 89TV has it right. The injectors are noisy as heck on these cars. Use a mechanics stethoscope [or a long screwdriver ;) ] and listen to the injectors. If you want, you can even unplug one of them and then listen to it, then plug it in and listen.
