My steering collum is loose...so loose that Im afraid it could come apart at any time. Like, it can move 4" in any direction. There isn't too much said about it in Chilton or that other repair book. Looks to me like it must be tightened from inside the collum somehow. Any one have any knowledge on this? Is it dangerous to drive with it like this?

You can pay a mechanic about $200 to fix it or do it yourself, prob for free. Most of the time just some screws are loose, but if it is a tilt wheel there may be more to it. Search the web for steering wheel fix and there is some good help.
Cragger,
I also have a 84 and had the same problem. I had just as much play if not more. I tighten the 3 torex screws under the directional assy. and still had the same problem. I pulled the entire column and took it apart. I found the bearing assy. was shot. I found a dealer in Fla. and bought a used steering column for $175.00. I installed the column last week and I'm back on the road. If you want the # of the dealer, email me. Good luck.
