Special thanks to Tom Casey for all the hard work doing an intake swap in one day and dynoing it before and after even!
There have been people waiting for some hard data on weather the LT1 intake conversion is comparable to other Aftermarket intakes. All of us that are/were running TPI know they are very limited in the performance dept as is from the factory.
Here's the feature Tom wrote and documented as published in the August 2003 issue of Popular hot Rodding comparing these 2 wonderful replacement EFI intakes. http://lt1intake.com/PHR2003AUG.htm
Well thats a tough call. Not sure what I'd pick looking at that. The SR kills the LT1 in torque and has more HP up to 5000 and then the LT1 takes over above that.
Almost looks like a wash. Maybe SR for Autocross and low RPM grunt and the LT1 for road racing & highway sprints. Then again, thats pretty much the difference between L98 and LT1. :)
Yup, the LT1 only takes the lead at ~ 5100 RPM, which is a little high for us TPI guys! :D I don't feel so bad sticking with the TPI style intake though, given my auto and driving style...
you never know, I might have to tow a small house with my torque-laiden Vette someday?
Cool article.. good to hear FINALLY a hands down test.
Considering the price the LT1 conversion is good, but I decided on less hassle with fitting, non emissions legality and remote thermostat, etc., and went with a superram setup.
Looks like the superram wins by quite a nice margin in torque and also edges the HP numbers, but the LT1 conversion wins after 53-5400rpms. Exactly as I though.. If you are looking for a autocross car to keep a car in gears at high rpms, the LT1 conversion is better choice. For light to light and drag runs, Superram all the way.. (considering my superram setup cost even less than the LT1 intake + modifications alone.. )
Looks like they used 3.42 gears on both setups. The LT1 should be able to pick up some low end with some different gears, but then you are right back at the SR price. Wonder what the times would have been then....still a hard call tho.
Interesting test... the dyno results are valid. I don't consider the dragrace data all that hot considering neither set-up utilized the torque it has down low with those 60 fts shown. The Stroker Superram set-up with the T56 has the capability of 1.6x 60's, however he was up around 1.95..... thus you're basically pulling the fangs away from the big strength of the Superram, which is the short times. LT-1 didn't run to its potential either.
How I would relate this to people who are trying to decide on which intake to run.... if you're bent on running street happy gears such as 3.07's to 3.45's and you're not interested in running 3000+ converters, then the Superram is probably your better choice, whereas if you're a dragstrip junky looking for maximum et and you don't mind running a lot of gear & stall, then the LT-1 would probably prove to be the superior intake.
Interesting. Much of what I was going to say, Beach took the words out of my mouth. But I have to say the hassel of the lt1 intake it seems is little worth the possible gains it has over the SR. Not to mention like beach said you better plan on gears and a big converter in the setup.
The SR is more of a direct bolt on that performs every as good
Corky, i think the stealthram might be the best of both worlds. Basically a tunnel ram intake with FI and a different plenum. Should make good torque and good top end. However, i have yet to see any real world results. Might be something for you to consider. I think your combo might like it, especially if you went with a set of 3.73s.....uh or did you put your rear end back together already.
Pretty good article. I thought the Lt1 might make a little more hp, maybe 15-20hp more than SR with that type of setup, otherwise it is what I expected.
The only thing I have to wonder about is that that they were running the LT1 intake a little lean - LT1's like 12.5 on the AFR and they were running it up at 13.5. I'm not saying that would make a huge difference but it might add something. Personally I think I would choose the SR over the LT1 given that Dyno chart - 30lb/ft more and 20hp more through 4500 rpm is a pretty big difference.
