On my 86 L98 I still have the 195 thermo and my fans come on at 226. The only time the coolant gets to 226 is during stop and go traffic. While cruising on the interstate if I'm running 75 or less my oil temps stay below 230. If I start running at 80 and 90 it'll climb on up to 239. I'll slow down to 75 and everything cools to 228 or so. This is about 10+ degrees hotter than last year. The oil is Mobil 1 5W30 and it doesn't matter if the oil was just changed or not. Any ideas?
Cheers
I had severe overheating problem years ago. Fan was running all the time and coolant would boil over on a hot day. I was about to replace radiator when after removing top cover I noticed thick buidup of poplar fluff that passed condenser coil an collected on the surface of the radiator. You might have a similar problem.
:banghead:
I would pull the radiator and clean it. :steering:
You might not need to do that. If you remove the top cover that gives you enough room to do cleaning. I used pressure washer and liquid soap, it worked well. I also used heavy scrub brush and I combed the condenser fins and picked all the little rock and bugs.
Later after learnt experience I added fine wire mesh in the front or coil that does good job at keeping particles out, however occasional vacuum cleaning is required.
Other idea might be to flush cooling system, especially if the coolant is cloudy and there is sediment in expansion bottle.
