I have an 86 that has 52000 miles on it.The owner before me kept it in awesome running condition.BUT.I have been driving it regularly and I noticed a gas smell when I crank it and when I come to a stop.I checked everwhere and found no leaks!I can smell it on the driver's side and under the seat around the back tire on the driver's side.Fuel pump and filter have been changed recenlty.Anyone know what this might be?As for the car's running and performance,it's great.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well, now that I think about it,sometimes it takes a few seconds to start up after I have been driving it.When its cold it will start right up.There is no smell coming anywhere from the engine though!
I do recommend that you find it ASAP....before driving it too much.....
Theres danger in them there hills....well you know what I mean...

A steel line goes from the evaporative canistor (fuel vapor recovery system) to the fuel tank along the driver's side. There is a section that is rubber fuel line just ahead of the the rear tire on that side - bet it's cracked - speaking as the voice of experience.

:iagree: I had the exact thing happen. It was the short rubber section that was cracked. It helped but I still smelled fuel. It was the fuel cap! If you don't hear that pressure hiss when you loosen your cap, that may be your problem too.
