Default Throttle Body Bypass - Disappointing results

Installed the throttle body bypass, 160 thermostat, and programmed the fans for 195 to 185. I even attached a funnel under my frame through a hose to the throttlebody to provide air cooling. The bottom line is that after a short ride, 15 to 20 minutes, the throttle body is noticeably cooler. However if I drive for 45minutes or more, the heat from the manifold is transferred to the throttlebody and the darn thing is as hot as ever. Thereby negating all of my hard work. What am I missing?

what you need to do is take off the intake and get the bottom side jet coated or poweder coated to get the oil to not stick and to reflect oil and heat! that is the true way

Unless you plumb liquid CO2 or a cooled liquid it won't STAY cool. The TB bypass is not there to keep your TB/intake cool, just to reduce temps.

I wouldn't bother with using the air routed into the TB coolant passage.

The hood of a C4 is like a clam-shell. And fiberglass is a great insulator of that heat generated under it. I thought about installing two NACA ducts on each side of the hood to flow some cool air through there or a pair of 12VDC fans mounted to the inside of the lower wheel wells to route hot air out over the tire. There's just no ventalation under there so everything will absorb the heat eventually. And aluminum is the second best heat conducting metal known to man (copper being first).

FWIW,

BIG JIM

Well but is the TB temp higher than the coolant temp?

 Thoroughly confused  :D

The water to TB is supposed to heat it up to prevent icing

Not surprised bypassing TB is disappointing

If you take the TB apart and look at how much coolant actually goes through there you will realize why you where/are disappointed.

More heat from the engine affects the TB once engine is hot, than heat from the little amount of coolant going through it. I am afraid, IMHO, that this "free mod" is worth less than what it cost you!

It's like cutting out the filter lid, except the filter lid mod may actually offer a little positive result at speeds over 80+ MPH

I made my own bypass and have the same feelings. It gets so hot in there (especially in the desert) whats the difference.

To think they charge a bunch for that kit in the catalogs......shame! :iagree:

If you really want to reduce heat soak you can cut the part of the throttle body that the coolant flows through OFF. Less metal, less heatsoak but theres no return once you do this mod :D

No need to cut, it unbolts.
I had good luck with thicker gasket on my cast aluminum runners, thicker gasket reduces heat transfer. My plennum is fairly cold considering fact that there is flow of hot air from the radiator.

The best way is to shave about 1/8" off the runners mating surfaces and use fiber spacers just like on newer engines for that same reason.

exactly what WERE your expectations?
This mod is, and never was meant to show any major results in either direction. This is one of those "free" mods that have an accumlitive affect on yuou performance....that you may NEVER notice.

The only way to really cool your TB (in my opinion) is to have cool air blowing directly to it, but I still wouldnt expect much of an improvement during the summer months.

I found that by just removing the "T's" where the throttle body lines go into the main water hoses works best. It gives a much cleaner look by replacing the T's with straight connectors. Just my $.02

The TB bypass combined with a 160 stat. was one of the best things I did for my L98. The plenum is raised to allow air to flow under it. For me, the plenum is a good place to put my hands when I'm doing engine work. I had to use towels and gloves to put my hands on there before the bypass. Now I can use my bare hands!

The TB will now come to the temp of the plenum in time but not to coolant temp; and it will cool quicker as there is no longer hot coolant in there.

Another benefit is that it's easier to remove the TB since you no longer need to drain some coolant and mess with the hoses.

While I havent done this on the vette I have done it to my 96 Impala. However I also have a ram air setup that allows over flow air to run past the TB keeping it a bit cooler. It also doesn't suffer as much from the heat soak as it has iron heads.

The best way to beat heat soak on a daily driver is probably to get a ram air system that passes air over the TB. my .02

Every little bit helps. This is on an LT1 F-Body.

we often overlook the EGR system that adds heat to the manifold.... but it's a free-be.. and we all love to tinker around with the cars.
