That's alright if she never goes above 173, but I was wondering, when you first start it up dose it automatically read 168 or is that the first reading you get after the "LO" gose off??

:(

I doubt very much that your coolant temp stays in the narrow range of 168 to 173. It sounds like your sender on the right side of the block is defective and not reporting the actual temperature. When you first start the engine the coolant temp should say, "LO". and as the engine warms up it will suddenly show 100 and then start climbing to the opening temperature of the thermostat. After driving long enough to get the engine to the opening temperature of the thermostat and then sitting at a stoplight, the temperature will rise to 200 - 220 F and will start to fall when you get underway. Under 35 mph and summer temperatures, the coolant temp will climb again. If you let the engine idle long enough, the temp will go to 238 and the main fan will be turned on by the ECM (238 will not hurt your engine). Letting it idle until the fan comes on is a good check of the cluster temp gauge as it should read 238 or close to it when the fan comes on.
