Okay, my car has been running a little too hot for me. Highway use, it's perfect. Around town with or without AC on, it reaches 230 ish. I don't think pulling the rad will find anything since my mechanic seems to remember pulling the rad when he put the new engine in. Besides, previous owner installed a screen under front bumper and in front of rad, so nothing would get sucked up. I've heard that maybe it's time to look at the water pump.
What are my options?
1. Meziere HD electric pump
2. New GM OEM pump
3. Service current pump
If I was to service the current water pump, how could I tell if it's working OK?
Look at the weephole of your current pump, if its not dry then your pump has gone out. I wouldnt bother with converting over to Meziere electric on L98, but I might go with a new Stewart pump instead of GM. (If the WP is the problem)
But something is up with your cooling system somewhere, if you have a lower stat and your fans are set to come on at lower temps.
A Stewart waterpump cost me $104 to my door for my 87 L98 and at a stoplight with the fan on in 90 F weather and a 195 thermostat, my coolant temp goes to 200 F. It used to go to 210-220 F. ALSO, wire screen or not, recent pulling of the radiator or not, you can still get small debris in front of the radiator and it needs to be removed periodically. An easy check is to blast water from a garden hose backwards through the radiator and then around the radiator cap gap to flush out what you loosen, then drive your car and observe the coolant temperature.
