Default engine mounts

My 87 vette is making some small vibration through steering wheel, whenever I turn on the AC. I can feel this vibration when I am holding steering wheel. This problem only occur at idle or low speed acceleration. I wouldn't feel any vibration on freeway (>50mph). If you don't turn on AC there is not vibration at steering wheel. My mechanicans told me the engine mount is getting bad which cause the vibration. At higher speed the car is more floating and steering power gain more power. So the vibration would not be feel so much. At lower speed the AC put a loan on engine. At higher speed the AC gets power from car not much engine. Is this sounds reasonable?Does anyone know how can I check engine mounts? what kind of engine mount should I get (autozone?)? How to replace engine mounts? Is this a big job? For $200~300 should I let him do the job?

Thanks

Don't have a favorite brand, but replacing them is not a big deal. You will have to lift the engine up. I use an engine lift and not a floor jack. It will help to have the distributor out so that it does not hit the firewall. I don't think you need to drop the exhaust, but I had mine off when I did the mounts.

Raise the engine just enough to get the weight off the horizontal bolts and remove them. Then raise the engine as much as possible. The mounts have three bolts each. Two at the top and one below the mount. The lower one is a little more difficult. Swap the mounts, put the bolts back, drop the engine and put the horizontal bolt back in and you're DONE.
