Aluminum LT4 flywheel
Who among you has experience with these?
Was the experience good?
Or bad?
I'm thinking of one as my first performance mod. Have had great results with one on an "import", and think the 40lb wonder on my '96 may be a good candidate for a garage wall ornament....
Do a search for 'SMF' or 'single mass' and you'll get lots of info. My car had an aluminum flywheel when I bought it. I changed back to the stocker due to the noise. If you want to give it a try I'll sell you mine. lspalding@ameritech.net.
You will get increased noise if you go to the single mass set-up...I don't mind but everyone asks me what is wrong with the car while it is in nuetral...The flywheel made a definate difference just as it has in my imports, it feels like it pulls alot harder and I get more throttle control...HOWEVER after taking it to the drag strip it is very hard to launch....I was launching around 4500 and getting OK 60 foots now I am laucnhing at 5800 and have the same or worse 60 foot....The first time I tried to launch it hard I almost stalled (with Mickey Tompson et's) Any way I would not trade it for the world but if I was doing a drag only car I would go to a single mass steel flywheel........But I am no expert.....I have an 88 scirocco that runs 14.3 and the flywheel took off a tenth in the qt.........I guess every car acts different.......
cant you also run an Fbody flywheel? how does the LT4 flywheel differ from the Fbody flywheel? what does this noise sound like? how loud is it? if you were runnning muffler elims, could you hear it?

Re: Aluminum LT4 flywheel (lspalding)
Thanks for the tip, Ispalding. I had searched the archives prior to posting, but had used "aluminum flywheel" and got nowhere.
I used your suggestion ('single mass flywheel') and got LOTS of info!

Thanks for the info, Buell. I have an '87 Scirocco myself (note my forum name) and your times are such that your '88 cannot be anwhere near stock...right? My experience with light flywheels is also in Sciroccos and it is all very positive.
