I asked this question before (I know), but it was mixed in with another one that got answered which had to do with gains. How about just sound, any difference or just mental stimulation?
Actually if someone has a clip that would be AWESOME... I'm looking at this set up:
3" Tri-Flo
RandomTech Cats
SLP or Hooker shorty headers, if I even get shorties
I'll probably try to get them to do 3" piping in between these components as well.
(sound q only about header addition though :boxing )
Re: SOUND change with shorty headers? (BowTieBlood)
I have long tubes on the vet, but I use to have shorties on my Iroc. I installed a flowmaster exhaust a few hundred miles before the headers. It was a bit louder with the shorties and it also seemed to smooth out the exhaust note. I don't know of a better way to describe it than that. It just sounded smoother. My buddies noticed it too. Sounded much better with the shorties.
I know it wasn't a vet, but same basic motor. Hope it helps.
Thanks for the response, what brand did you have? I'm looking at SLP or Hooker for the LT1, but not sure if I wanna fork over the money for little to no performance gain, just wanna hear them or get enough opinions about the sound.

:iagree: Seems like the shorties did smooth out the exhaust note on my car too. Also, seems like the shorties removed some of the interior exhaust noise.
I have ported Hooker shorties with a true 3" collector, 3" mandrel bends off the collector into 3" Car Sound cats. This ties into my B&B system with the x pipe and the restrictor plates in the tips removed.
The headers are a little louder. I went from stock manifolds with no cats to shorties with cats and it was louder as soon as I started it. It became even louder with time.
Unfortunately I don't have a clip. I've recorded it before but the tape recorder can't pick up the bass. It sounds awesome. With the windows down it will give you a headache. Rolled up it's tolerable thanks to the hardtop. The power change was noticeable. Enough to make me smile. I wasted a lot of gas when I got the headers done:).
I love my exhaust. I will never change to another brand of muffler (I've had a few setups before). It's low, mean and sounds expensive. It doesn't sound like a modified Camaro or a truck.
You won't regret going this route. Still emissions legal, great power increase, great sound.
Re: SOUND change with shorty headers? (BowTieBlood)
I have Hooker shorties from Jet-Hot with the Sterling coating. They look great! As far as sound, I have a stock LT-1 system, pretty quiet. But it does sound better at WOT. My reason for shorties was not big power gains (that's for the LTs), it was for heat reduction under the hood, especially after shutdown. They also look much better than the rusty ole manifolds. The final reason for the shorties for me was simply no fabrication required and I kept my cats in place so a cat back system will bolt right up.
IMHO, I'd save up for a set of long tubes if you could afford them and high flow cats (or if you don't care about emissions). You'll see almost twice the gain you'd get from shorties. I've never heard a Vette with headers in real life, but on the LS1 Camaros I've heard, they sound like totally different beasts with longtubes.
Re: SOUND change with shorty headers? (LT4 2 Fast)
I'm running JBA shortys with Borla mufflers. When I installed the JBA's, I noticed a much deeper sound from the mufflers at highway speed. ... and that's just fine with me. :D
Re: SOUND change with shorty headers? (Beautiful Beast)
Yes - If you are in Houston stop by and listen to mine. The problem is there are other mods now but when I first added the shorties I noticed the difference in sound and with the additional mods it sounds great. :steering:
