Went to accelerate after passing through the toll booths off the thruway yesterday and heard a bang, noise like something let loose. Next thing I know I am in neutral, so I roll to a stop in the middle of 10 lanes, yea. I still have park but no other gears just park and neutral. :mad :mad :mad
Any ideas as to what gave out, had troubles before, but only lost OD, never all of the gears. Thanks again!!!
Tranny Blues, FRED
About the 5th time of roasted a 700R4, Spent more on trannies in the past 3 years than I have for the car or mods :banghead:
My tranny repair manual says that its the torque converter. But just havign rebuilt mine I can tell you to look at tranny that has the "torque drive" components. These are design to takes your max 300hp rating to 700hp rating. Chaning/rebuilding the trans (even with better frictions) won't help the holding power of your tranny...only the hard parts.
I feel for you. IMHO, 700's are hit or miss. I went through a few incidents like you're describing. Once I didn't lose anything, it slipped like mad and whined like a had a 6-71 under it. Tranny number two was taken out by that fabulous vigilante convertor(NOTHING WORKED).
If you re-build it with some better hard parts(clutches etc) it should last a while. My current one behind my Ling 383 takes plenty of abuse on the street. Be sure to install a transmission fluid cooler. That makes all the difference. Lots of failures are due to overheated oil.
My tranny rebuild says it's the torque converter. What exactly did they do when they rebuilt your tranny these last five times?
My intuition says it is the one of the hard parts in your tranny that has failed. (park actually "keys" into the output shaft via the a whatchamacallit so it whould never fail). In addition, i have read here about many people having an incorrect alignment to the crank shaft...thus put a side load onto the TC and causing failure.
Get someone to look at your drive shaft if it is moving its your rearend. You should be able to tell just by the seats of your pants. How's the engine idling does it rev higher than normal in park? in drive?
Thanks for the info., I'll check it out later. Will be transporting the car back to LevelTen, transmission shop in New Jersey, it was supposed to be bulletproof. I'll keep you posted............
FRED
Level 10?? I heard they were great. Sounds to me like you blew the front pump. If you pull the upper tranny line going into the radiator you should have fluid shooting out with the car running, it can be in park it shouldnt make a difference.
That's what I am hoping happened to it. I am a bit over the 1 year warranty, but am going to ask if they will still cover seeing as the car sat for 5 months during the winter. Taking her down on Friday. I'll keep all posted as to my results....
FRED
Well, here is the word. I blew out my drum, which is the part which holds all of the clutch packs together. And after talking to some tranny guys there is such a thing and basically can only be blown apart from too much hp or a combination of hp and driving characteristics. When I asked if covered under warranty, Sam replied that he would check into it for me and get back to me later in the week. Supposed to be done by friday, will head down on saturday to pick-up. Anyone else done this to their trannies??? Talk to you later guys.........
FRED
Why don't more people just convert to a TH400/Gear Vendors combo? Oh ya, "it costs too much." Oh well. Sorry Fred. I couldn't help myself. Good luck in your dealings.
The input drum (the majority of the time in Hi-Perf situations) breaks from running too much line pressure, blocking "accumulators", oversize boost valves, etc. I have seen this happen (rarely) when the transmission is built right, if not, it can happen more often. Remember the input drum is aluminum.
