TV cable ?????

I'm sure this has been talked about but I haven't had any luck with the search feature. MY brother-in-law (a certified mechanic) was at my house and we were talking about the poor shifiting and the TV cable. He told me how to adjust it then what we did was pull the throttle to WOT and pushed to button on the cable housing. The whole cable moved about a 1/4 of an inch and he said all done. Is this the right way to do this? I thought I've read about this and if you adjust it wrong you can burn up your tranny. I havn't driven the car since we did this because of the weather but I was hoping to take it out today and don't want to ruin anything. Thanks for the help.

Cool thanks for the info that just seemed to easy and I wanted to make sure the was nothing there to cause damage
