Default Looking For JL9 Caliper Bracket

I am posting this for a friend that has registered, but has yet to get his confirmation code. his user ID will be "gm-kid"

"Here's the deal. I am in need of a caliper bracket from a JL9 brake setup. I just need one, and only need to borrow it for a week or so. I'd like the person to be in the KC area, so I don't have to mess with shipping."

If you have one of these brackets that Jeremy "gm-kid" could borrow for a week or so. He is trying to build a bigger brake system for his Grand Prix/Buick Regal and wants to use the JL9 bracket to get a custom bracket made that will work on his car.

Please email Jeremy at gtpkid@comcast.net. He should be able to post and answer post any day now.

Come on guys.......I need some help here. I'd even be willing to buy the calipers and brackets as a set if it's affordable to me. Here is my original post that STL was gonna post but he shortened it !!!

Thanks go out to STL94LT1 first of all for posting this on my behalf. I registered as gm-kid but it's not active yet.

Here's the deal. I am in need of a caliper bracket from a JL9 braket setup. I just need one and I only need to BORROW it for a week or so. I'd like the person to be in the KC area so I don't have to mess with shipping. I'll tell you why I need this.

I used to have a 98 Grand Prix GTP and it had the Baer Track brake system on it. It's a 13" rotor system with the PBR dual piston caliper. It's the same setup as the J55 system the C4's use. I thought about my idea when I was swapping the brake system to a friends car. We went to autozone to buy some pads and I knew to ask for pads from a 96 GS Vette. That got me thinking..........

Well the reason I need a JL9 caliper bracket is because I don't want to be REQUIRED to run with a 17" wheel because of the 13" rotors. I've spoken with Superior Chevrolet and Chris there is SUPER cool. He's got all the parts there for me except for the caliper bracket.

What were going to do is take the spindle from a W-Body car (GP/Regal) and the JL9 caliper along with the borrowed bracket and see how it fits up. I know I'm going to most likely need an adapter bracket made, that's what my neighbor is for !!! I also know that the Bolt Pattern of the C4 Vette is 5 x 120.67 or something like that. The W-Body is 5 x 115. The rotor I'm looking to use is the Oldsmobile Intrigue rotor. It's an 11.9" rotor. The only thing I'm not sure of is the difference in thicknesses of the C4 JL9 rotor and the JA9 Oldsmobile Intrigue rotor. If you know the thickness of the JL9 rotor, please tell me !!!

SO.........sorry for the book but that's what I'm doing and that's why I need to BORROW a caliper bracket from a JL9 setup. Please email me at gtpkid@comcast.net if you have one you could let me borrow.

Thanks again .......

gm-kid

I am also trying to find some info out about the JL9 system. Is it a PBR 2 piston caliper like thet J55? What was the first year the JL9 was available on the C4?

Thanks for your help guys.......

Give it a few days or post in C4 Parts... there should be plenty of old 12" brackets around.

The JL9 rotor is 12" x 0.78". The JL9 and J55 calipers are nearly identical except for the throat width, because the 13" rotor is wider (13" x 1.1"). Both systems use the same pads in fact. JL9 started in '88 and ended in '94. You will need to get the parts from a base-suspension C4. Hope that helps.

Jason --

Yeah........that helped a lot. I'll be on the lookout for a 89-94 C4 base system. Thanks for the info about the rotor thickness too !!!

Thanks man

Jason --

I just found out that the Oldsmobile Intrigue 12" rotor is 32MM thick (1.26") That means that I'm going to HAVE to run the J55 caliper aren't I ?? I know that the J55 caliper is 1.1"....that means the Intigue rotor is 4MM thicker. Let me know if that would be a problem with the caliper setup.

I'm also wondering what J55 calipers and brackets would run??? Where could I get the brackets new if I wanted them? I have pricing for the calipers from Superior Chevy so that's cool.

Just let me know......

Later

I'm the wrong guy to ask, but it really sounds like the Intrigue rotor is too wide for the J55 caliper. Maybe you could sand down the pads though...

As for cost... I sold a 60k mile *pair* of J55 calipers for $75; the going price appears to be $50 to $100. The new price is too expensive. The brackets are inexpensive enough to buy new, if you can't find them elsewhere. Lately many folks have been upgrading to C5 brakes, so the old parts should be out there.

Might also look into the 98-02 Camaro front rotors too, they are 12", but I'm not sure of thickness/offset, etc. Good luck.
