I was autocrossing today and detected the aroma of antifreeze. There is antifreeze around the thermostat area and on the underside of the hood. I think it may be the pump. The car has 71K miles. I had to drive home 125 miles. If it is the pump can I get by by just changing the pump for now. It is the heart of autox season and I don't want to be done for a couple of weeks with the opti spark right now. What does everyone think. Since I haven't torn into it yet [tomorrow] is there anything else? I have a hard time believing it;s the thermostat "O" ring.
You could just change the water pump, but since you have to remove the water pump to access the opti, it would certainly be prudent to change both units at the same time. This would remove the uncertainty of waiting for the opti to fail, and duplicate your labor when the opti finally goes.
A forum moderator, Thrills, posted a great source and price for the pump and opti: Sam Taylor Chev.....contact: Jason 850 244 5165. I believe she had her pump and opti replaced for about $750, including labor. The price she received was cheaper than Superior Chev. You might contact her for additional info.
First and foremost, find out where the water is originating. No sense in changing any part that isn't broken. If it is the waterpump, you can change it without doing additionally damage to the Opticrap. Just put a hand full of rags on top of the Opti the cover the rags with a piece of plastic. The rags will absorb any water that get past the plastic.
Most people will say you should replace the Opti when you do the waterpump. Well in an ideal world that is probably true. I can also tell you that I have done 2 pumps and "0" Optis. Currently 152,375 miles, but I am in the process of putting in the 3rd tranny also.
