Default Test Fans without Running to Temp?

Can you test the fans without running the car to the trigger points for normal operation?

You need to ground the A terminal to the B terminal in the ALDL connector under the dash. That will energize all the relays except the fuel pump. ( at least that is the senario on my 92)

using octane boost :auto:

According to some, shorting A to B will retrieve codes. Are you saying that with the engine running it will trigger relays?

Jumpering the ALDL will test the main fan (behind the radiator); to test the aux fan in front of the radiator (if so equipped) jumper the aux fan switch lead to ground and turn the ignition on.

The aux fan switch is located in the block below #1 & #3 spark plugs. It's Grn wire runs into a harness along the left inner fender well.

Another way is to use a bi-directional (bi-directiona, means it can send commands, as well as, read data) scan-tool like the Vetronix Tech-1A, MasterTech, or Tech-2. However, they are expensive. This is what the dealer uses.

That may test the main fan but not the aux fan on an L98; as the aux fan is only controlled by the aux fan switch and not at all by the ECM.

Make that the HEAD. Because the heads are the same, side to side, there is a similar sensor or plug between cyls, 6 and 8 on the other side of the engine. GM swapped sides for the different sensors/switches, several times. On my '84 the fan switch is on the right, between 6 & 8. I believe the left side between 1 & 3 is correct for the '85. In the opposite location, is the sending unit for the guage. Good luck, and...
