Bad news is I filled the tank thinking I had my problems ironed out, good news is I needed 15 gallons of gas for the yard equipment anyway...
It turned out that the lid holding the sending unit and fuel pump was cracked almost all the way around.
a. Is this that expensive $600 item people have talked about? It's hard to tell from the book but now that I have it out, it looks like it's one piece?
b. Do multiple years fit i.e. should I try to locate one at a junk yard? I seemed to see conflicting information on this.
I'm thinking it may not be feasible to weld it since it obviously didn't like to flex to begin with. There is literally only about an inch that wasn't cracked.
Any thoughts/alternatives appreciated by this newbie to both the forum and Vette ownership.
Thanks Z01. I'll try locally first (now that I know what to expect to pay), and go with the out of state guys if that fails. You've got a nice site, got it bookmarked for future refrence.
Just so you know,I believe after 1987,GM used a larger return line on the sender.I bought an 89 sending unit and the return hose would not fit on the sender, since it was the same size as the feed line.
Notice on your car,the feed line is fatter than the return line.Be sure to check this out with the parts people you call before buiying it.Make sure they check it for the proper sizes so your fuel hoses fit.
Thanks for the tip on the pipe size, I didn't notice that when I was removing it, and now that I know what I'm looking for I have noticed that the used one specify a greater year span than the new ones, so I'll keep an eye out for that.
Thanks also for the reminder regarding ebay. Since I just bought a new lift there and saved $800, and I've bought a few other parts there, you would think I would have considered going there first...I guess it's just a habit I'll have to get into.
