I am trying to fix my possesed climate control and I was suggested to purchase a new head unit or used one. I found one for $50 buck but it does the same thing as my old one. When you activate the climate control it will start blinking the light for the button you have selected (i.e. if you select auto it will blink the light that is above the button) and will in the next 5-15 minutes lock up . . . you have to restart the car to get it to reset. It also reads the out side temperature correctly until you activate the climate controls then it drop to 51 outside.
I contacted the person I purchased it from and he is willing to send me another unit but he suggest I check the "programmer under the dash next to the column. Its the unit with electricity going in and vacuum going out." What is he talking about and does any one have a service manual that would have a section on this. Thanks for the help
I have a '90 and had a problem with the programmer - but not the same symptoms as yours. As you said, it is high under the dash between the column and the console. I found it hard to remove the vacuum harness - there is a difficult to remove nut. The programmer is responsible for lots of problems. Good luck!

here are some pics:
this is another thing to look at under the hood Do you have heat on demand? There is also a way to get the codes from the Idaho Corvette tech page. It's around here somewhere, lemme see if I can fish it out.(codes will only show when the prob is actually occurring)
Thanks
White90conv for the information and thanks 89 Paul in Cal for the photos at least I will know what I am looking for. 89 what was your doing to make you pull the programmer? Was it doing any of the thing mine is doing?
I should add that the controller(the one with all the vac lines hanging off it) is encased in a black plastic cover. I think 2 or 3 screws hold it to the firewall. Make notes of the vac line locations. In my case I didn't have heat. Only cold air. However my head unit still does the crazy light show thing. I haven't touched that yet. Jim 65ZO1 has the procedure to clean the contacts on this. See his site.
Assuming no codes, you might want to check power inputs & grounds. The only input from the programmer to the assembly is the position of the air door. Everything else is an output from the assembly to the programmer. A loss of one of the grounds or power might be causing the blinking lights and for the display to lockup.
