I have a '96 auto with 20k miles on it. (Just back from the 50th party in Nashville) When cruising along at 70-75, and then backing out of the throttle, I get a whining sound much like a manual transmission. Its louder at higher speeds than at around 45-50. Any ideas or is this normal in an R4? Fluid still appears clean and full, maybe a u-joint?
Re: Whining noise on deceleration C4 Automatic (pologreen96)
Sounds more like it is coming from the rear end. I have never seen a 700R4/4L60E do this, I'm not saying it can't happen, just nothing there to do this, from what I have seen.
Re: Whining noise on deceleration C4 Automatic (PoloGrnC4)
My 94 does the same thing ever since I replaced my 2.59 rear end with a 3.54.
It seems to be louder in overdrive than drive. I'm interested in the reponses you get.
:withstupid: Mine, too. Ever since I took out the 2.59's and replaced them with 3.54's, I notice a little gear whine upon deceleration. No problem - I just keep accelerating! :D :D :D
Re: Whining noise on deceleration C4 Automatic (pologreen96)
1 more vote here for probly diff noise.mine does it too with 373 gears.
trans gear trains do make noise when they get tired and sloppy but its more noticeable in lower gears. i.e. really hear it in 1st gear mild acceleration or neutral throttle range.nothing in 3rd because its direct 1 to 1 in 3rd...
might be an idea to suck out the diff lube and swap to synthetic and add a couple tubes of gm posi additive if you havent yet.
Re: Whining noise on deceleration C4 Automatic (mitymek)
Mine does it too. I have stock 2.59 diff. I think it means we probably need to put some synthetic gear oil in there instead of the conventional stuff, along with the req'd 4 oz of limited slip additive of course.
My car has 35K on it and to my knowledge the diff has not been serviced yet. I really need to get to that...
