Well the car is running. Here are the issues I sorted out tonight.
1. Fuel Pressure: I originaly had it at 42psi at idle. Then I remembered that hte Ford injectors require less pressure and dropped that down to about 35.
2. Base Timing: Set it to 6* and the computer for some reason wasn't advancing timing at idle at all and the timing light still showed 6* with the EST connected. I reset the ECM and things fell back into place and gave me 21* of advance at idle.
3. Coolant Temperature: I was showing high temps of 210+ which is unusually hot for my car (normally 175-185 at idle). I think this was a combination of 3 things. a) We got a couple more pints of coolant into the system. b) The ECM wasn't advancing timing as was said in #2. c) The new coolant temp sensor I bought at Autozone for the ECM was registering between 10-12* higher than the coolant temp the ECM was seeing from the sensor in the front of the manifold. Putting a Snap-On MT2500 scanner onto the car verified this hunch I had and showed the difference. The car is now idling at a nice 175* again.
4. Charging system: Gremlins. Don't kno why but it wasn't charging at first. Is now like a champ with 14.0 at idle.
5. White Smoke: This one isn't gone yet. There is a lot of white smoke coming out of the mufflers. I am almost positive it is nothing more than antifreeze stuck in the mufflers from when the engine shot a ton of it into the exhaust back when it blew up. The left muffler has cleared up almost 100% and it is not a true dual system. This tells me that it is stuff contained in the mufflers. There also is NO coolant in the oil and there are NO air bubbles being pressed back into either the radiator or the overflow tank. I am going to drop the exhaust after the headers tomorrow. If I see no smoke there I'm good to go. In fact I have an exhaust leak at the left collector (like I always do) and there isn't anything coming out of there (even though i'd expect it to be the right side since that is where the issue was).
So..... hopefully within 24-48 hours I can drive her again. I sure did miss that sound. :reddevil
You scared the **** out of me with the white smoke, that is more than likely the anti freeze burning off the exhaust. I had that happen to my mustang gt when the cam and heads we're done, it had a little anti freeze spill near the header..it steam/smoked for a while.
You're moving along nicely. It's weird how other stuff goes wrong isn't it? Thanks for the update and just in time for summer!!
You scared the **** out of me with the white smoke
Trust me Jay I'm still scared. :) I had it running for nearly a solid hour tonight and it was still smoking. Until I verify it at that right header I'll be nervous.
someone was trying to tell me that why did i put so much time into my corvette, and i just said it sounds and drives so good that it just makes me happy.
...Probably a crack in the water jacket/cylinder wall with the coolant spraying directly into the cylinder... :D
SHUSH!!!
I had the heads pressure tested when I had the welding and milling done to them. The cylinder wall itself had no scoring in it. <crosses fingers> It seems to be running smooth with no misfiring. I think tomorrow i'll stick a thermal gun on each primary to make sure they are all relatively the same temp.
Brain your fuel pressure sounds low for your setup, even with those injectors.
Use the scanner to see what the BLMs are at various steady RPMs; use it when you take it out to see what is the O2 sensor reading at WOT. You are better off running a little rich than lean.
I'll check it out, but I can still smell fuel in the exhaust. The chip in the car has it running mega rich up to 4500 RPM.
Brian,
Regardless of what the chip is set at, as far as fuel from stock to 24# injectors, your car should be contolling the part throttle AFR to 14.7.
If in fact you are smelling a bunch of fuel, then most likely as a results of the coolant, or silicone in the RTV, depending on what you used to seal up the engine. The O2 is probably lazy or totally dead.
On the TGO they have been playing with silicone. One spray near the intake or even around the car. Renders most 02s dead!
Never use Silicone sprays on anything in your car!
But for starters I would take a look with your scanner at the O2 cross counts and also the voltage swings.
Good job thus far. Hope it all works out as you plan.
Did you look at the plugs? Sometimes a cylinder with water in it will really clean that plug. But if you only have an hour or so on it, it might be hard to tell the difference. Did you read that article on engine breakin tips a while back? Seat those rings.
