I have a 96 coupe with 67000 miles on it and my low oil pressure light comes on every so often after a cold start up. I have shut the engine off and checked the oil level and it is fine every time and i have checked it with the engine cold. If i shut the engine off and then restart it the oil light turns off. What is the solution to this problem? is the sensor going bad? if so where can i buy a new one and where is the sensor located on the engine so i can change it. thanks
When I had a similar problem, the sensor was bad. It's located in the oil pan itself on the drivers side (if it's a stock pan). I'd get a new one and change it the next time you change your oil. :yesnod:
where are good places to find this sensor and what is the part number?
Call your local dealer and find out how much they want for it. Then call Chris May at Superior Chevrolet (800-728-8267), mention your a Corvette Forum member, and get their discounted price, figure in shipping and then go with the cheapest.
I want to say it was around $20-30, but I don't remember for sure. I spent quite a bit around the time I rebuilt the motor, so it's all kind of a blur so to speak. Give Chris May a call, he'll give you a quote if you're not up to getting one now. :yesnod: At least you'll know.
Are you sure it is "low pressure" and not the "low Oil" lite on the DIC? The only sensor in the oil pan is the Low Oil Level. They are nortoriously false by the way. I've replaced mine and it still does it more than occasionally. I just cycle the ignition on and off without starting the car and rely on the dipstick.

Okay, he brings up a good point. Your systems descibed my LOW OIL LIGHT problem. That light is on the DIC. (which I'm sure that's what you meant) If you're talking low oil pressure that's the gauge on the dash and if that's low, you should be talking less than 10psi and that's not good. :(
