Default [1995 LT1] Getting Caliper bolts off a problem?

I'm thinking i will undertake doing my brakes this weekend. Afterall, its just rotors and pads.

But, i'm concerned on getting the caliper bolts off. I know they are torqued down pretty good. Has anyone ever had a problem with this??

Aren't they torqued to something like 160 ft/lb? I forget what. Don't forget to get new bolts. :yesnod:

Use a 6 point socket and 1/2 breaker bar. That's what I did and they came right off. :D

A six point is just a regular socket, correct???

And, i should get 8 new bolts? Two for each corner?

Ahh....my 94 didn't have any caliper bolts. It just had one long pin with an "E" (don't know the tech. name) clip. Easiest caliper I have ever taken off.

There are some difference of opinion on the new bolts requirements. If you use some blue locktite on the thread, you should be OK. Short of that the bolts are $5. per. as I recall

True, But to get the rotor off, The Bracket has to be un-bolted...

He's actually talking about the caliper bracket bolts, which need to come off for a rotor swap.

Anyways, you need four bolts for the front (two per side), the bolts on the rear are different. I think I just reused the rear bolts.

I thought you were supposed to use red formula thread lock on stud bolts?

:iagree:

I think IMHO that red is more appropriate

Again, just MHO, but 160ft/lbs sounds high, 88 is, I believe, 135.

To make them easier to get off, because GM did use a thread locker, heat them with a torch and then let them cool down before trying to remove.

Just keep the torch away from the fluid lines, abs lines and the caliper piston...remove and move aside the caliper first

Just MHO

:seeya

New bolts?

I've had my rotors off atleast 9-10 times and always used the originals with some antiseize.

No worries they are going to come loose.

Either use a 6 point socket or I just used a closed end wrench and a 5 pound sledge to tap the wrench...

:)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll take a look and see how bad the bolts look. Tomorrow i'll stop into a dealership and see what the TTD would be on the bolts. I have the time this weekend, so i'd love to do it then. But i don't want to rush it either. Afterall, these are my brakes for goodness sake

Just did my 92. the calipers come off with just removing the pin. To get at the rotor you have to take off the bracket with two bolts, 21mm. My shop manual says 166 lbft on these. The rears you undo one bolt, then rotate the caliper down to replace the pads. Again to get at the rotor you have to take off the bracket. Smaller bolt size, don't remember what size, but my shop manual says 85 lbft on these.

Good luck

True enough...but if you ever want to get them off again without using a 1/4 stick of c 4, I put the blue on ....10,000 miles later and all is well. :D
