1987 Smog pump design .. help needed
Anyhow the first time this happened 2 years ago I went to a mechanic and he used a stethoscope and located the problem to be within the smog pump. So I went out to an auto parts store and bought a new one. I installed it and and that cured the problem.
However it has happened again.. and this time was told its from the same place. So I went to the store and bought another and to my surprise the smog pump itself is designed differently. I went to several different stores and noticed the same thing.
I'm unable to use the new ones because on my old one there is a spacer of some sort sititng on top where the pulley goes onto. There is a nipple in which the pulley sits snug onto before you bolt the pulley into position. These new smog pumps dont have this. They have a flat surface with a fat nipple in the middle. It's incompatible with the pulley that I have. What do I do?? I was told to go to a machinist and have them take it off and press it onto the new one. Why should I have to do that when they made the smog pumps just fine before and now all of a sudden its a different design ???
I can't drive the car now and don't want to be stranded because the bearings all of a sudden caused it to stop working. Help me out guys ! Thanks.
