I just got in a conversation with a mechanic, he insists good oil is oil, no need for Mobil 1. What is your opinion on this. I'd love to print out your responses and show him. :chevy
the other thing i like about synthetic is you have to change it less often, which means only having to fit a jack somewhere under my car half as often
Maybe the mechanic can contact GM and tell them the same thing. What do you think they will say? "Get Bent". GM is just choosing what they believe is the right type of oil for these engines. Only the best for America's Sports Car. :D  :flag
Your 1996 requires synthetic meeting a specific GM spec (spec code # I cannot remember off top of my head). Your owner manual also states that to use any other oil not meeting the spec can void warranty. Although your car is out of warranty this is GM's way of saying use only synthetic. GM put Mobil 1 in as factory fill when they built the engine. Why sit and try to re-invent the wheel? Just go with GM's wisdom and put in *only* Mobil 1 synthetic oil. 1992 - 1996 Vettes are notorious for running hotter than other cars, as a normal operating condition. Mobil 1 is excellent at the high temps these cars generate.
I agree with the other reply: Find a different mechanic. LT1 and LT4 Vettes *require* synthetic oil.
You will come to learn that when shopping for a mechanic, you need to find a *Vette* mechanic, and actually a C4 Vette mechanic with a good reputation.
Use the forum "Member locator" tool on the drop down menu and put in your zipcode to find forum members near you (maybe). Ask around among them to find a good C4 Vette mechanic.
Don't trust a mechanic with little or no C4 Vette experience to go wrenching on your '96, no matter what he says to re-assure you. :nono:
Mobil 1. LT1/4 engines require synthetic oil because Chevy didn't put oil coolers on them. Unless you've added an oil cooler or you're sure your oil temp will never get above 230 degrees, stick with Mobil 1.

Actually I think the F-body (camaro/firebird) LT1's had oil coolers, but correct about Vettes--> no oil coolers on Corvette LT1 and LT4.
I recommend that you follow mfg's. recomendations, in your case Mobil 1. I use Mobile 1 in all my engines. Be sure to use premium fuel also, we don't want to get into brand debates, just remember premium. Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of help available, don't be afraid to ask.

Mobil 1 breaks down at a little over 300F, regular oil starts breaking down at about 250F.
Regular oil will build up sludge in your pan, Mobil 1 will not, and even removed all the sludge that was in my pan from the reg oil that was in before. Mobil has cleaner/additive packages that remove any gunk from inside the oil system.
It will also last longer than 3K miles, mine goes about 4500mi.
You all are awesome! Thanks for the replies! I'm printing this out, and giving it to him! I just had my oil changed, and I'm glad I insisted on Mobil 1. Had to wait forever though, because he did not have any instock. He told me next time to bring my own oil, well, there won't be a next time, at least not with him!

There ya go, you've learned well already! I don't know what I'd do without the CF. Even for my L98 I use Mobil 1 - full synthetic
I talk with a GM powertrain engineer from time to time on a different board. The topic of Mobil 1 comes up a lot. He say the only reason that GM requires Mobil 1 in the Corvette is because there is no oil cooler. At the elevated engine oil temperatures that Corvettes might see during agressive driving, conventional oils will begin to break down while Mobil 1 will not. If GM says use Mobil 1 - there is a reason.
