Don't have any pictures, but I had a 6 items installed the other day, MSD ignition being one of them. The shop didn't tell me where they were going to mount it, but when I showed up, the guy who did the work had fabbed a little bracket and using the bolts on top of the intake manifold, attached the ignition directly on top of the engine... Is this going to be OK?
Looks rather funny, but seemed like a decent idea, plus he didnt' make a hole anywhere in my car or move anything around. He said it was the place with the most room and lest heat that he could find... :smash:
Re: Odd spot to mount MSD.... What do you think??? (mackeyred96)
I mounted mine on top of my battery. I had a couple problems that seemed to be heat related with it. After about half hour drive on hot day the box would fail. I'm sure it was the box because I could jump out and unplug it and go back to stock and the car would run fine, then I could replug it and it wouldn't work. I sent the box back 3 times under warranty. They kept saying they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They said it would be fine to mount it where I did too. I checked the temp on the unit when it would fail and it was running about 140 as shown on my temp gun. They said that should be fine. It hasn't failed yet this year and it's in the same spot. When it fails again I'm sending it back and then when I get it back I'm going to mount it inside somewhere. Sorry so long, just thought you might like to know.

It'll fry on top of the intake. I mounted mine behind the drivers side wheel well below the battery. Its mounted to the wheel well wall with brackets. I had to cut away part of the battery brace to get it to fit. It's one of the coolest spots in the engine compartment and unless you know where to look it can't be seen. :D :D :D

I beleive that will be way to hot for the MSD. I know when I was drag racing, most people mounted them in the car. But in the vette, you'll still want to get it where it can be as cool as possible. On top of intake will be very hot in my opinion.
Re: Odd spot to mount MSD.... What do you think??? (BowTieBlood)
mine was mounted on the driver's side, under the master cylinder. it's very close to the exhaust manifold, but i've never had no troubles about it getting hot. there is a metal shield over it tho.
Re: Odd spot to mount MSD.... What do you think??? (corvettemaster)
There IS a chunk of metal between it and the intake manifold, which I know won't get rid of much heat, but do you think it's enough to keep it from messing up? I don't really have the know-how to put it anywhere else myself.
I drove Austin - Lubbock, and the unit didn't feel too hot, but the metal it was on got pretty hot.

I remember reading in a magazine (long time ago) that these MSD boxes should be mounted as far away from the firewall as possible on street cars. The reason was these units put out alot of electromagnetic interferance which could cause radio or ECM problems. Did you encounter anything like that when you drove the car home?
I don't have an MSD box, but I've been considering it. If I buy one, I will probably mount it on the driver's side, forward of the wheel well (near the carbon canister). Looks like a relatively cool, dry place that's far enough from the firewall that it won't interfere with any of the car's electronics.
