My brother and I are heading out to a local dragstrip for open drags tomorrow. I have not yet raced my 94 six speed. What rpm should I launch at? Anything I should keep in mind?
My car has K&N, open air lid, air foil, Corsa exhaust, BFG KDWS tires.
My brothers charger has a dyno power of around 350 hp at the wheels, but his car weighs a lot more. The engine is a 440 with bigger cam, roller rockers, better 4bbl carb, shorty headers, Edlebrock intake, bigger heads, etc. However, his car is a 3 speed auto (granted with a high stall torque converter).
Anyway, what are my chances? He has dragged a few times before, but his tranny was acting up and pulled around 14 seconds. I have no idea what the car will run now.
I figure the pros for me are: 1) six speed 2) lighter car ... and 3) Hell, its a vette.
The cons for me: 1) the 70 charger 440 makes a LOT of horsepower 2) My brother has dragged before 3) the car is gigantic plum crazy purble beast.
Any suggestions on what I should do? Tire pressure reccomendations?
Thanks for any help, not that I would need it in a Corvette, of course.
When your brother's not looking take #3 spark plug wire and swap it with #5 on the Charger... Just kiddin'
don't sit and spin - damn that pisses me off when I see that at the local track's open Friday night drags. You should be WOT before the 60' mark, but not right off the lights.
You should beat the early Charger....440ci.......if you don't...well just don't know what to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has one hell of alot of weight......
But he is your brother......and blood is thicker than water.....
Good Luck

Re: Racing 1970 Charger! Help! (JADVette94)
There is a forum specifically for you drag guys, remember. You may find more answers there.
Start from IDLE? The idea to to put maximum power to the ground for the maximum amount of time. I would think about 2000rpm would be better than idle....now, do you slip the clutch or dump it? You need to do some experimenting tonight!
Can you beat your bro? He'll be more consistent (experience and an auto), but you probably have the potential to run quicker if you can launch and shift.
Good luck and let us know!!
(I'll put $5 on the Corvette)
My comment would be that I think the Charger should do better than 14's. Story time: In 1969 I bought a new Dodge Super Bee, 383, auto. Bone stock it ran mid 13's. Never had the motor apart, put in a Mallory dual point, jetted the carb, 4:56 gears, Hooker headers, M&H slicks and ran mid 12's. Good luck but from my own experience I ------------------:)
if he doesnt have slicks you got a chance.
if he does he should be mid 12's with that would be my guess (uneducated at that)
i couldnt find the specs but seems to me those cars were rated at 375 hp stock (325 on the 383 mag and 390 hp on the 440 6barrel)
and ran low 14s-high 13s on E70-14 bias ply tires.
Well, sorry to let everyone down. I red lighted on the first two runs (a little anxious...or maybe I just didn't know what the hell I was doing). Anyway, after that my car, with stock fans and stock fan settings of apparently 228* for pirmary fan and 235* for secondary fan, was running so hot that it missed and bogged all the way down the 1/4 mile (driver inexperience is also likely a MAJOR factor). So my first timed run was 14.557 seconds with the miss. I then let the car cool down for an hour or so, went back, and by the time I was out of the staging area and ready to run again, I was back up to around 230*, and the same problem occured, so I let off and pulled out Fabulous 16 second run, barely beating some old green car that was next to me. Anyway, my brother's best run was 14.02 or so. Hence, as soon as I get the fan thing sorted out (by wiring a manual fan switch most likely) I will go back and assert Corvette dominance over MOPAR.
If anyone can help me out on how to cool my car down without a manual fan switch or tell me how to wire a manual fan switch on a 94, please do so. See my post:
I did a search and read all of the posts for manual fan switches, etc. It sounds like 93 and 92 LT1s had different color wiring than 94. However, I have it figured out as to what I will do:
I will get a new relay for the secondary fan because according to what I found in my search, the relays are the same, and when I switched the sencondary relay to the primary fan, the fan did not come on at 228*...so I am fairly certain the relay is bad.
Then I will connect a jumper wire between the green primary fan wire and the dark blue secondary fan wire, so both fans will come on at 228* and if my primary relay should fail, the secondary relay will still turn both fans on at 235*.
Third, I will wire in a manual fan switch to the green wire on the primary relay so that I can turn BOTH fans on between runs at the track.
Fourth, I will go back to the track and bring home a time slip with a sub 14 second run and give it to my brother.

Your miss is most likely due another issue, probably ingnition (wire or optispark would be my guess). While the high temps isn't the best for performance, the car still shouldn't missed if hot. The ECM should be able to compensate enough for this. As many rookie's (and even some people who go annually) find out at the track, it isn't as easy as it seems to do, especailly with a standard. BTW what was your 60' time?

I launch off idle and I don't slip the clutch or dump it. That gives me the best 60'.
If the Charger is only running 14's, you got him for sure, but remember reaction time plays a part, I've seen many a slower car win based on reaction time. Especially if you guys are going heads up.
