Default Distributor gear orientation?

Is the small "dot" on the distributor gear above the thru hole, supposed to point to the rotor tip or opposite side of the rotor tip?

Does it even matter?

Good question. Had to go look it up. Checked for an 85 in Chilton and the factory service manual. Neither said it had to be one way or the other. Factory manual said to mark the gear and shaft if you remove the gear and put it back on the same way, but did not specify if there is a right or wrong way.

Looks like it does not matter.

I would think that you would just adjust the distributor a slight bit more , when you look at the gear end the diffrence is only @ 1-tooth.

Also, isnt it possible to move your cap around a bit by moving the distributor on the cam gear by 1-2 teeth forward or backward?

My coil wiring is sort of back close to the rubber hood molding and I would like to have ti be away from the molding. :seeya

Absolutely, YES! Except for the lack of room for wire routing, you can put the #1 plug wire anywhere you want. It may help a stranger trouble shoot a situation; however, if you stick close to the origional positioning. Good luck, and...

 I agree, the number one wire can be wherever you want it to be, and maybe I missed something here, but it has to be where the roter thinks #1 is and all the other wires have to be moved accordingly.

Adjusting the cap (including the distributor body) to offset a difference of two or so teeth in getting the gear set in right can lead to problems in setting timing.

Assuming you have properly marked the position of the roter and the distributor body to reference points on the engine and the firewall, try adjusting your tongue as you try to get the distributor back in the right groove :D

If your question pertains to reinstalling the drive gear on the bottom of the distributor shaft, you really can't get it wrong since it shouldn't go on upsid down

Jack,

You put into words, much that I assumed was understood. Of course you are correct. EXCEPT:

IT DOES! The distributor won't install in the engine, but the gear WILL go on either way. I removed the distributor in my Crossfire to shim the typical GM "slop" out of my distributor shaft. I installed and removed shims until I was happy. Finally I reinstalled the roll pin and stuck the distributor in the hole. I won't admit to how many times I had the distributor, in and out, trying do adjust the oil pump shaft to let the distributor "drop". I pulled the distributor one last time and checked to see if I had burred something, preventing it to "go". The open end of the gear was a plain round hole, the chamfer was against the distributor body. DUH!!! I pulled the pin, flopped the gear, and instant install. I was amazed by the small amount the end play had changed with the gear in the proper orientation. It DID require a small re-adjustment, but it was as close as GM builds them. I hope many can learn from this screw-up of mine.

RACE ON!!!

the "dimple" should point to the rotor tip. :chevy

:D :D Sometimes you have to fully explain yourself :D I am sure, like me, you have been amazzed at some of the stuff posted here. Hey, everyone means well, but you probably know the old saying about the road to hell being paved with good intentions :D

I am still trying to learn, from another post, how oil(motor oil?) enters the brake system and deteriorates the rubber parts. Live and learn! :D

Keep up the good work!

CFI-EFI your not alone, I pissed away a couple hours trying to figure out why the distributor would not go in with the gear on upside down! :lolg: :lolg: :lolg: :smash:
