I have been trying to figure out my Climate Control problems for about two weeks. I have replaced the head unit with a used one but it acts the same as the old one did. When you activate the climate control the LCD will start blinking and will lock up after a while. . . you have to restart the car to get it to reset. It also reads the out side temperature correctly until you activate the climate controls then it drop to 51 outside. I have collected the codes that it is putting out: 02, 04, 06, and 08 all the time. It has also put out codes: 01, 03, 05, 07, and 10 (the only one it hasn't sent is 09) a few times but mainly the 2,4,6,8 set. Is there any way the system could have this many problems but work great half of the time? I have checked the terminal but they are super shinny and look great. I have been told it might be the programmer but I have also been told that the programmer takes commands from the head unit. Any thoughts would be great.
Unusal for everything to be bad, but as I recall you replaced the dash unit, so I would think something isn't working that the dash assembly relies upon to maintain the set air temp. So my guess would be the air door. It's controlled by low voltage signals from the assembly and there is a return voltage so the assembly knows it's position. See if the motor is stuck by pulling the blower module on the evaporator housing and then observing the door as someone operates the controls from full hot to full cold. If the door isn't moving it may be that the motor or it's linkage is bad. A bad motor should set a code, but who knows, maybe its making everything else wacko too.
Mike, If you have the Helms manuals it gives you all the necessary info on the codes as well as a diagnosis flow chart. If you dont have them... get them. I would look them up for you but I am at work.
I will give a look a try and see what I can see. One of the things I have been wondering about is what is typical failure scenario on the head unit. Could this be it? Locking up and showing a lot of codes and not reading the information correctly? Just wondering if my head unit was band and then I purchased a bad used head unit and that this is the typical scenario for the units when they go bad.

I don't have the Helms manual or know any on that has one. If you can look them up when you have a chance that would be great. It is hard to get to excited about driving the car in 90 plus heat with the AC sometime working.
No I haven't. What will this do besides resetting the codes for them to re-read? Are you thinking I might have some codes hung? I have pulled the fuse (can't remember what it was called) after I changed my oxygen sensor (to reset the Service Engine Soon light) but not the Courtesy Lamp and Radio Fuses. At this point I am up for anything.
I was having some strange problems with the "Auto" control button turning itself on and off in the '96(this was before I knew about pulling codes from the ECC). The owner's manual states that you can reset the system by pulling the Courtesy Lamp and Radio fuses from the main fuse panel (ignition set to Off/Lock) and waiting 1 minute. Although the manual suggests this procedure following the addition of refrigerant, I figured what the he!! and tried it - with no problems since.

That is close to what mine is doing, but mine does it on all settings. When yours would go to Auto would it continue to put out air or would that shut off? Mine shuts down.
