started yesterday. Normally on morning startup (or anytime for that matter), car idles up, then settles into a steady 800rpm idle. Now, especially in the morning, car won't idle up...idles at about 250-300 rpm and will stall easily. It will idle after it warms up, but still not up to 800. about 600. what's up?
This could be any number of things. Some are specific to both the L98 and the LT1 (plugs, wires, injectors, vacuum leaks, MAF, etc.) others are specific to the LT1 (Optispark).
Earlier this week a Forum Member posted a thread indicating that he found the solution to his problem by replacing the alternator which dropped to an unacceptable low voltage at idle.
Well, the plugs, wires, opti (vented), air cleaner (K&N), water pump, egr valve and solenoid have all been replaced within the past 2500 miles. I was thinking maybe the IAT malfunctioning or maybe the TPS? Course I have no MAF...how about MAT?
Ittlyfly....I don't think it's ever been taken out and cleaned. I did have to replace the connector (which broke). I checked that again, seemed fine. So maybe a take out and clean, huh? Any suggestions, any hidden problems in the procedure I should know about?
The hard part is getting to it as it is at the bottom (pass side) of the throttle body. If you can't get it off then you can remove the TB. Clean it up with a tooth brush and throttle body cleaner. Be gentle as it is motorized. also clean the tb bore that it fits into. There is a procedure for reseting it. You can search the archives or if you have a Helms, the procedure is in book 2 page 6E3-C2-15.
How to tell if the IAC motor is working or not?
Take the intake bellows off (the piece after the air box) and run with the throttle body open.
Start the car with the air conditioning off, listen to the sound and then turn the air on.
It should sound like a big vacume (sp?) leak just strated... that's the IAC opening up to let in more air to bring the idle up.
If you don't hear a change turning the AC on and off the IAC is not moving and probably needs to be replaced.
