The previous owner of my 86 Convertible, had told me the KYBs on only had 5k before I bought it. They squeeked like Hell! I opted to replace with Bilsteins (NOT CHEAP) but tight and absolutely no Squeeks. Felt as though I may have had a bad set, where they were so fresh. Told the Mechanic that mounted them, He could keep the Kibs, He tossed them! said they were JUNK!
I asked the same question, before I was willing to spring for the new set.
My mechanic, (30+ years foreign and domestic service/repair) said he could compress the KYB shocks with his hands, a sure sign that they were sloppy, and the Bilsteins so tight , he thought the car may ride too stiff.
I much prefer the tight ride, and the squeeks are gone. Therefore, KYBs were my particular problem. But, as oldace84 states, yours may be another.
