Engine transplant done. New crate engine in.
Finally got the transplant done. Put a new GM crate engine in the 85. Ended up being cheaper than a rebuild and got a nice GM warranty; 36mo / 50k mi.
For those of you who read the post a couple of months ago, my old engine was pretty much toast after the timing chain gear gave out.
Took a couple of weeks to clean up the engine compartment, sandblast aluminum parts, polish, buff, clean and repair everything. Also replaced all electrical flex tubing that was worn or cracked and put new connectors on where needed. Tons of work over a 40 day period, but now everything is nice and clean. Put chrome valve covers on. May go back to the original if I can get them looking good again.
Here are some pics;

Heck no! When I said clean I meant sterile :)
Running great. Idle is smooth now and power is back to what it should be. Plus, the cat is gutted and the flowmasters really rumble now. :thumbs:

I'll try to answer all the questions in one post;
Which engine?
It is the stock GM 350 crate engine available everywhere. I got it from a local Chevy dealer who stocks them. So there was no shipping cost.
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results...umber=10067353
Part number is 10067353 (same number at Scoggin-Dickey or Pace)
What's it rated?
Should be the same for the stock 85, about 230hp. But have not tested it. Feels the same.
What's the switch near the alternator?
You guys have sharp eyes! I have the cooling fan on a switch so it can run off the sensor, on all the time or off all the time. I normally run it ON. But when doing work around the fan I shut it off so it does not surprize me.
