I'd like to start by saying how crappy, hydro-prone the Falken Ze502's are. I am wondering what other people out there are running on their 88, 89,90 vettes and how they like them. B/c My vette in the slightest rain/water hydroplanes and slides like a mother. All I've ever had on there are Falkens, and let me tell you how much they suck. What is a very/best tire for the rain??
Haven't tried the Firestones, but really like the Kumho 712s in rain. Haven't had any problems in the rain, actually they feel better then my all-seasons on my daily-driver in the rain. Plus they where only $87 a tire
I like the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 XP. One my third set (3 cars). It seldom rains here in Nevada and when it does the roads are like black ice! But the Firehawks seem to handle very well. Expensive, with alignment and balancing they set me back just under $1,000. I do believe that you get what you pay for; cheap isn't always the best. Tires seem to be a very personal choice.
I am running the ZE-502s on my 84 and in the rain it is crazy how slow and careful I must drive!! I am tight on funds so my next set of tires will probably be the Kumho 712s. I have heard nothing but good about them! :chevy
yes, slow..... on the interstate.... everyone is going say.. 60, i have to do about 40 or 45 in the right lane and get romped on by everyone. IT SUX.
Those things hydro so fast....mother of god.
i can't speak for the Firestones, but the objective testing by the TireRack found the Goodyear F1-G3's to be a par above the Michelin Pilots Sport Max and the Bridgestone Potenza S-03's. i just got them myself, and so far i have found them to stick very good in light rain. haven't driven yet in a downpour.
I dont know about rain tires, cuz it NEVER rains in So.California. However, the few times it does, I have trouble too. Its way too scary to drive any faster than 55 if there is a lot of rain. My brother complains about it too. The Corvette just sucks in wet weather.
I will add my 2¢ about tires though. I had Yokohamas and I really didnt like them. The had a rough ride and had terrible traction. The one consolation I had with them was I had a great time tearing them up. Then I got Kumhos and thats what I have now. I like em better than the Yoks. Softer ride and better grip. Kinda mushy though.
Recently, I did a tire test with BFG KDs and KDWs. I was very impressed. I got to drive the 350Z with KDs and Yokohamas on a coned course. The BFG KDs were far superior. Maybe a little rough if run on vettes but I dont know... I also got to test the BFG KDWs with the IS300. again the competitive tire was the Yokohamas. Again noticably better. Of course I grew pessimistic and then started looking at the tires and suspension and other things that could make a difference. The difference favored the Yokohamas with the IS300. The BFG KDWs had been totally used. They had been put on the previous week and had been running the event every day since. The cords were starting to show on the side edges of the BFG KDWs. And the Yokohamas were just put on that morning, so the event coordinator told me. I can tell you now, my next set of tires will be BFG KDWs.
BTW, the 350Z is a very fun car to drive. I really would like to have one. And the IS300 is a pretty good luxery sedan. I dont know how much they cost, but I am guessing that its too much for the car. I didnt really care for it that much. I would rather get a mazda 6 or something like that and save money.
I'de trade my Sumatomo's any day for your Faulkens. But you are porbably still using the stock size.
With tires, you get what you pay for withthe exception being the Kumho's. I've got some BFG KDW2's coming but if I ever get married again and have a son, the tire dealer gets him.
