Re: How do you replace the Oil Pressure sender? (vader86)
I didn't replace mine, but when I just did my intake I got a good look at that thing. I think if you pull the distributor you should be able to get at it, but I'm only guessing.

On my 86 I pulled the wiper motor. Piece of cake from there, easy to get at.
You can get at it also by pulling the distributor, but that (to me) is more of a PITA.
Good luck Larry

Re: How do you replace the Oil Pressure sender? (scorp508)
Does anyone have a picture of the sender, there seem to be several switches back there, and Ive never dug into it that much to see whats what. Which one is the pressure sender?
Also, when i went to the parts store and tried to get one, they pulled up 4-5 different parts for the oil pressure sender, and I didnt know which one to get.
Re: How do you replace the Oil Pressure sender? (vader86)
I assume your 86 oil pressure sender is the same as my 88. I had to buy a special socket from an autoparts store (Pepboy) to take the sender unit out. The tool does say oil sender unit socket. I know for sure that we did not take the ditributor or the wiper motor out. Don't remember that we took the dist. cap off. The difficult part is when you have to re-connect the wire to the sendr unit, you have use your hand and plug the wire back in with no room back there.
Re: How do you replace the Oil Pressure sender? (scorp508)
My 85 has a dual terminal on it, if you take the distributor out it is extremely accessible, just mark the distibutor beofre you pull it. Or you can take off the wiper cover and then its still tought to reach. Wiith the distributor out it is,,, butt naked back there, you'll see stuff you might not want to see,,,, just kidding!
Also, the big, cannister looking deal on the same hex post is the oil pressure sender, they are only $13 so change it while you are back there!
Re: How do you replace the Oil Pressure sender? (scorp508)
Hmmm... my oil temp sender is just above the oil filter. My oil pressure cutoff switch is next to the pressure sender though. Are 85s different?
What exaclty is the cutoff switch, is that in case oil pressure drops below a point that the ECM says , kill the engine?
Anyway you are correct, the oil temp sender is above the oil filter and the one next to the oil pressure sender , I thougt was an oil temp to the ECM sesnor, evidently its a "cutoff switch", yes?
Re: How do you replace the Oil Pressure sender? (CentralCoaster)
On this pic:
Why is there two different little doodads? Is for the senSOR and the other the senDER? Gosh, hope NEITHER of mine EVER go out!
Although, on my 85, I had my oil pressure go up to 85psi and SIT there. (Which in turn scared the crap outta me!) Then I found out, that it just meant the connector had came off the terminal in there. So I reached in and plugged it back in and voila, good as new! :)
EDIT: Ok, I'm a dumarse. The factory actually puts a Cut-Off switch?!? Wow! Something that'll actually SAVE our motors! GO GM!

Larry,
Please don't ask this. We've been through this in another thread where there are claims that the oil pressure switch signals the ECM to disable spark. I say no, another says yes.
Vader86 you can really help out with this debate if while you're back there you disconnect the oil pressure switch and try to start the car. Obviously this is going to have to be with the distributor back in and a known good fuel pump relay. Get everything back working and engine running, but leave the wiper motor out so you can get back there. Once you're satisfied all is back to normal, reach back and disconnect the oil pressure switch, the two wire one and try to restart, let me know what happens. It would be a big help. BTW if your '86 is unmolested, you may fing a black plastic retainer around the oil pressure switch. Thanks.
