I've been looking at air pump eliminator kit for my 88', does it really do what it says? gain 20hp? about how much can i get one for, and where at? thanks to you all...
No, you won't free up 20hp thats for sure. :) They are more for cosmetics than anything else as the air pump doesn't take up THAT much horsepower. You can really remove a ton of stuff though once thats gone that cleans the front of the engine up.
Simple test: take off the belt and rotate the pump by hand and notice how little resistance it has. This is not like running an AC compressor. You can just take all the air stuff off and leave the pump in place. Plug the holes you leave. I had my headers and cat welded up when I removed the plumbing. Much cleaner and much easier to work on now.
I bought the air pump eliminator and installed it. I couldn't tell any difference in the seat-of-the-pants dyno test but it did clean up the engine compartment. One thing I had to contend with is the high amp output wire to the alternator. The eliminator kit hangs the alternator farther away from the engine and my wire wouldn't reach without stress. I ran a 6 gauge wire from the alternator stud to a junction stud located behind the battery, lots of wires go here to tap into the 6 gauge wire coming from the battery. The alternator charging circuit and air eliminator both work fine now and the engine looks so much better without all that plumbing.
Oh, I paid about $160 or so for the eliminator. It shouldn't cost nearly that much since there isn't much to it. I think Mid America and Ecklers both carry them as well as other suppliers.
