Default Early or late model 1985 ???? Fan switch

I just purchased a lower temp fan switch from MAD. it says that if its an early 85 its between the 6 and 8 cyl. and most late model 85 between the 1 and 3 cyl. well I have a sensor on both sides. Which one is the correct for the new cooling switch. I do have an aux fan. so how do you know which one?

hmm...that's strange..On my 85 the chip (Hypertech Thermo Master) controls primary fan operation (on at 185 off at 175) and the Hypertech fan switch screwed into the passenger side head (p/n 4026) controls the secondary fan operation (on at 180) no ***** or settings to mess with and everything works perfect...I'd send that mess back to MAD myself.

6&8 = Fan switch

1&3 = Coolant temp display in dash

You can't always go by this though. As the MAD instructions state your above is true for early '85. In late '85 and onwards through '89 they switched them to 6&8 Temp Display and 1&3 Aux Fan Switch.

To tell look at the connector. The Buttonhead is the Aux Fan Switch, the Spade Lug is the Temp Display. To verify disconnect the one on the driver's side (1&3), with the ignition switched on, ground the wire you just disconnected. If the Aux Fan comes on, you have what MAD is calling a late '85 and this is the one you want. If the Aux Fan doesn't come on, check your dash for a Coolant Temp of 299°. If the guage reads 299°, you've got the wrong one and have what MAD calls an early '85.

I'm willing to bet that MAD means early and late 86 because this is the year the heads were iron early and aluminum late.

True enough about the heads but the Guage Sender and Aux Fan Switch were changed around during '85. I haven't been able to determine the VIN breakpoint, but it happened in the '85 MY.

If you had, you'd have your answer. Why the reluctance to experiment to find the truth. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

you are right. I replaced the one on 6&8 when I first got the car last year but I just went into the dealer and said I need the sensor between 6 and 8. I had to change the connector to blade because the other was discontinued. So.... now both of my sensors have blade connectors and neither looks like the one I just bought.. But I will go out and try the grounding procedure and maybe that will answer my question. :flag

Well I grounded both and the fan did not come on at all...maybe bad relay or fan motor

Well tried the short trick. neither fan works. Got SES light and plugged in scanner it was 32 kind of normal. but i did notice that when the code checker was plugged in the main fan came on. temp is ambient cause has not been started in 1 week. Replacing front wheel bearings. This is probably normal, but I never remember the fan coming on when plugging in the scanner before.

When you say short trick, what exactly are you shorting? The main fan coming on when in diagnotic mode is normal. When you jumper ALDL A to B, most relays under ECM control will energize.

The blue wire you say you saw on the driver's side, should be the Guage Sender. When you grounded it, did you check the Cluster for 299? You need to do this with ignition on, remember.

i believe its 6&8, i would disconnect one and see if your gauge reads "LO" if so you found the temp sensor!

This is what I suggested above. The reason I said ground it, is because if the engine hasn't been run, the guage will read LO normally, so he wouldn't know if he's got the guage or the aux fan. If he grounds the blue guage wire, the guage will read 299 regardless. Maybe I'm not being clear.

Just ran the car to temp. disconnected the pass side and temp stayed on the number on shut down...so that is probably the fan switch on pass side.

but now I grounded that lead and no aux fan. is there another way or maybe the fan motor is toast?

Sounds like you got the right one now. Next in line is the Aux Fan Relay.

Just replaced the relay this morning and now it works ok...as soon as it cools down I will install the low temp switch.
