Default Tranny issue, or something else?

86 Automatic- engine revs from 1700-2000k RPM's with accellerator steady. Doesn't do it while in drive, only when set to OverDrive. I am not sure if it may be an O2 sensor problem or perhaps tranny slipping. (tranny completely rebuilt 3k miles ago.) Any insite will be appreciated.

Well, I had to make a hard stop a couple of days ago & the car died for no apparent reason. I am sorta taking a shot in the dark. It could be a number of possiblities.

I got a Check Engine light when I started the car about a week ago. I disconnected the battery to reset it and it hasn't come on again. the code should still be there though, right? The engine revs up and down, but only at around 35-40 mph.

it might be a fuel issue: pump or regulator?

And this would be a good opportunity to clean the throttle body and start checking sensors (though this will most likely not be the source of your problems). Also reset the TV cable and check your tranny fluids, etc.

Good luck!

Check your MAF... Mine just blew today at the track, and on teh way over there it did something like that on the way over there (120Mile Drive).
More like a surge though..

I think youre gonna need to try and pull the code, it might have triggered again. But if you left the battery disconnected, the code was cleared.

If a code was tripped, id bet it was the MAF/relays. But youll have to check and see.

Is the tranny slipping only in overdrive? The simple trick if you haven't done it yet, is to adjust the throttle cable, it is more than a "downshift" cable it also sets pump pressures in all modes, I would try that first.

I had my tranny "soft rebuild" about 18k miles ago shifted fine until recently, the tranny started shuttering in overdrive, but not in drive. It then started to slip when accelerating (engaging passing gear), the car also started setting codes and running hot, new radiator, pump thermostat. To make a short story long; it finally hard failed and was completely rebuilt, the overdrive shaft and gear assembly shattered.

I haven't reinstalled the tranny yet because I'm still deciding on an engine rebuild so I'm not sure if the tranny was causing codes to be set or making the car run hot. Good luck!
