Default 1988 Transmission Problem

Does anyone have any ideas?

It does not hold in Park
It does shift normally when driven.

Something simple?
or
Something bad?

Do you mean the car will roll when in park? It could just be linkage, but there is a parking pawl that engages into a cog that locks the transmission so it will no roll. I always make sure I set the parking brake (notice I didn't call it an emergency brake). By setting the parking brake when you still have pressure on the brake pedal the weight of the car is not being supported by the parking pawl.

Yep, thats exactly the symptom. Using the parking brake is a good idea except that since the problem started I've had to rescue my wife twice because she thought the parking brake was broken

Well that was the cheap repair - $84 to replace a missing bolt and to tighten others.

The other $4000 on the other hand was not fun  :cry :cry :cry :cry
