These were new a year and a bit ago, when I had the Saga of the Clutch.
I found today, whilst trying to figure out what happened, that the clutch fluid line, from the master to the slave, was resting against the cat's heat shield!!!!!! It caused the braid to wear away and the hose to split. A combination of heat and motion just ate it up... dammit. :mad
What is the correct route? My shop did this stupidity... and I ain't all that thrilled. :mad
My vette gets flatbedded over to the shop tomorrow morning... and hopefully fixed... ASAP.
From the clutch master cylinder the hydraulic line is fastened to the firewall via a hard to reach clip and travels down the side of the trans to the slave actuator. It's a pretty straight shot and the line isn't so long that it could fit in another configuration. My guess would be that they didn't run the line back through the "hard to reach clip" on the firewall to take up the slack in the line.
I had the exact thing happen to me on my 91. There is a small clip which is supposed to hold the line up so it does not rest on the heat shield. Well, as you can imagine bumps and such will dislodge the line and it falls right on the heat shield. I put a plastic wire tie on my line so it won't fall out, I recommend you do the same.
Are you doing the work or having it done? The line costs about $65. It's not too bad to install, getting the line bolted down to the firewall is a real pain. Also bleeding the clutch can be a real treat, if you get pleasure out of pain...
I was under the impression, apparently wrong, that the line is not available separately.
This is GREAT news!!!!! I hope it is not a hard to get part... I would be willing top bet it's a common part, tho... I cannot believe that GM would have 10 different lines for this job... well... then again, we are talking GM here.
hm... a clip thing. I was reviewing my Helms manual last nite, and I didn't see that, but I was scanning quickly - looking at pics and scanning for alerts/warnings.
I will check that when I get it home. I hope they can get the part fast enough.
The easy way to bleed these things is to use a phoenix tool. That will pump fluid up from the bleed screw on the slave to the master. in 5 minutes, you are DONE.
This is great news, tho! 150.00 is sure better than 300.00!!!
When my vette gets home, maybe today, hopefully tomorrow, I will check the mounting of the line and tie it up myself if it looks weak.
Thanks, guys!!! You answered my question!!! Perfect!
